Costa del Croydon
Centrale & Whitgift, Croydon
Bright, bold and joyfully unexpected, Costa del Croydon transformed a bare rooftop into a vibrant seaside escape in the heart of Croydon. The vision was simple: to create a place that brought sunshine, joy and connection to an unexpected setting in a way that was affordable for everyone. The activation reimagined what a retail destination could be, creating a lively, welcoming hub of activity and a place where people could pause, play and spend time together.
Now in its third year and having won multiple industry awards, Costa del Croydon has grown into one of the area’s most loved seasonal moments whilst extending dwell time and strengthening the connection to the wider destination. Golden sand, splash zones, games, relaxed seating and multiple photo opportunities turned an underused space into a colourful, high-energy destination, designed to welcome families, visitors and local communities all summer long.
Community sits at the heart of the experience. From bingo on the beach to dance performances spanning salsa, belly dancing and Bharatanatyam, the programme reflects the diversity and creativity of Croydon’s local communities. Families are drawn in through hands-on activities and retailer activations including F&B pop-ups, street art sessions and paint workshops, while live music and performances have broadened the appeal across generations.
The impact has been both immediate and enduring. Costa del Croydon has welcomed over 50,000 visitors across 2024 and 2025, generating strong social engagement, widespread media coverage and consistently positive feedback. From grey rooftop to glorious beach, it stands as a powerful example of how creative, community-led placemaking can transform overlooked space into a destination with real cultural and economic value.
